about

In Our Skin recalls a Morricone soundtrack and midnight mariachi jams on the streets of Tijuana. This song was born in Fiona’s favourite Mexican restaurant, El Compadre, on Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood. Movie and TV soundtracks have an enormous influence on Fiona’s musical visions, as did the years she spent as musician in residence in Los Angeles with her prime musical collaborator (husband) James Lomas in the late 90’s. ( In Vivo.) In Our Skin is a world weary tale of never being good enough for the voices in your head that tell you; “You can never win!” even while living a dream. Toxic neuro networks can haunt one’s best creative efforts, In Our Skin resolves that art for arts’ sake has an intrinsic value regardless of the “win” or “lose” result meeting market.
Epic acoustic instrumentation!

lyrics

It was one day off from Summer
in El Compadre’s Bar
Sitting
thinking drinking
while James looked at a guitar
When those haunting words
flashed into my mind
Hooked me to the past,
dragged me down, dumb and blind
Reeling me in,
said “Honey,
you can never win!”

A mirror by the bottles,
a painting on the wall
And I’ve got that empty feeling like I’ve
seen and done it all
When Augustine smiled,
and took a bottle down
He said “Tequila?
I’m buying you this round”
Feeling his grin,
he said; “Honey,
Feel good in your skin!”

I got lost on my way to nowhere,
home far away
The light around the corner,
gets closer each day
Mi compadre entiende, (*1)
I’d love to stay
Con toda mi alma y mi Corazón (*2)
I pray and pray
Letting it in,
Estoy Bien (*3)
lose or win.

It was one day off from Summer
and the sun was beating down
And every road’s a dead end
when you’re poor in any town
But sometimes,
we believe that we can fly,
So we flap about and try
Until we begin,
Just to feel good in our skin
Outside to in,
just to feel good in our skin,
In Our Skin.

*1- My friend, understands.
*2- With all my soul and my heart.
*3- I am good.
