Ashes and Clay is a jaunty guitar rich folk song that tells a story regarding the casualties of irreconcilable differences and taking grudges to the grave. Prior to the 1975 Family Law Act, (Australia) there had to be proven grounds for divorce (with evidence) that one party was at fault and caused the breakdown of the marriage. Divorce lawyers were the only clear winners. A song highlighting the sorrow greed causes.
lyrics
He said;
“I’ve done some things I shouldn’t a done, but I
can’t undo them now,
I’m gonna hit the road
face the river
and try to swim,
cause I feel
I’m gonna drown
If I stick around.”
She said;
“Oh well I’ve seen your
back before,
when I asked for
empathy,
Yeah
Keep running Darling,
‘til you find the door,
perhaps someday,
you’ll forgive me
Forgive old me?”
And in the old gum tree I heard
two kookaburras laughing;
“Remember how we fought?
how absurd it was all for nothing,
Give us that time again and
we might use another skill set
O Lord, we both just carried on,
and blamed each other’s innocence.”
Then every Christmas time a tug of war,
using young ones for the rope
Two ends of battles lost was all they saw
and they tried to live in hope
They said, there’s wrong and right and night and day
There’s black and white,
no shades of grey
Well that was years ago when they were young,
now they’re mixed in with the clay
Ashes and Clay
And in the old gum tree I heard
two kookaburras laughing;
“Remember how we fought?
how absurd it was all for nothing,
Give us that time again and
we might use another skill set
O Lord, we both just carried on,
and blamed each other’s innocence.”
Blood isn’t thicker than water now
as it flows under the bridge
We crawl to safety go outside their range
and we look down from the ridge
We see they’re suffering
their boggy trenches
and we know the state of play
It’s all a game of choice
and one day we will all be Ashes and Clay
Ashes and Clay
And in the old gum tree I heard
two kookaburras laughing;
“Remember how we fought?
how absurd it was all for nothing,
Give us that time again and
we might use another skill set
O Lord, we both just carried on,
and blamed each other’s innocence.”
